Do you memorize scripture as part of your homeschool day? If you do, congratulations! That’s great! I know you are seeing the fruit of your labors.
If you answered “no”, starting a plan to memorize scripture is not difficult to do. If you already are doing devotions in the morning, it’s a natural springboard to lead into. If you don’t do devotions, and easy way is to start with a few basic scriptures after breakfast or before bedtime after a Bible story.
As for the “why”, you aren’t encouraging the memorization of scripture just so you can show your kids off or put another check mark on your list. The reason to memorize scripture is to encourage your children on how to fight with the sword of the Spirit. Right now they are under your spiritual covering. Soon enough they will be on their own or face decisions that they have to make on their own. Memorizing scripture and hiding it in their hearts will help them remember what is right and what is not during times of trial, temptation, and trouble.
The first scripture we teach in our homeschool is Psalm 119:11. “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” This isn’t only for our benefit but gives definition to why we study scripture in the first place. When situations make us chose, this basic scripture helps us recall that we should choose God’s way so we do not sin against him.
Another scripture that has helped my children to decide who to hang out with or what activity to partake in is Philippians 4:8. “Finally brothers whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praiseworthy, think about such things.” This is the ultimate measuring stick that can be applied to just about every new person they meet and every situation that they come across.
Another favorite to help with discernment is Galatians 5:22-23. “But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control against such things there is no law.”
As our children grow up and move out they will take a few things with them. I believe the greatest and most important thing is a love of Christ and a love of scripture.
