In my experience, public schools tend to teach kids what to think rather than how to think. This is a serious problem! This type of teaching will mass produce a bunch of robots unable to form an original thought. Harsh? I don’t think so. We need to guide our children’s minds, not program them.
“The aim of education should be to teach us rather how to think, than what to think – rather to improve our minds, so as to enable us to think for ourselves, than to load the memory with thoughts of other men.” – Bill Beattie
I really love this quote. It wraps up my complete learning and teaching philosophy fairly well! I want my children to be able to form their own opinions on things. I want them to be able to weigh each side of an issue and make an informed decision, and be able to choose what is right and what is wrong.
