The rays of the summer sun are fading. The days are getting shorter and cooler. Soon the leaves will be changing. We all know what that means, school is starting! As homeschoolers we get to choose when and how we start our school year. With that in mind, how about not going back to school? No, this isn’t truancy speaking. I’m referring to forgoing the sad faces, moaning and groaning that generally starts off a new school year. This year, on your first day of school, don’t go back to school!

Either as a family or with a group of other homeschool kids, make this day truly a day you’ll all remember with a smile! Dedicate this day to remembering why homeschooling is unique and help set up the year for success. Either visit a place that is generally packed out with kids or plan an activity that is opposite to the typical school day.

Parks, pools, and museums are great places to go on your first day of not back to school! These places are generally packed out with kids of all ages. Since the “other kids” will be back at their local school, you’ll have the place to yourselves. Enjoy and remember that a flexible schedule is one benefit to homeschooling!

Grab your homeschool buds and have a not back to school pool party. Or go for the gold by hosting a homeschool field day complete with such Olympic sports as mega ice cream sundae making or crazy sub sandwich creating. Medals are optional as everyone wins!

Looking for an indoor activity but love camping? Build a fort city inside your home and go “camping” complete with stovetop or microwave smores. Tell stories and enjoy the fellowship.

Watch a movie that your family has already read the book too. Begin a friendly debate between the book and the movie. All opinions are welcomed!

Parents, as you celebrate not another back to school day, remember the reasons why you started homeschooling. Think about the wonder freedoms homeschooling affords your family. With much enthusiasm, make this first day of not back to school memorable and fun set your homeschool year up for great success!
