Why memorize scripture in your homeschool?

Many people think that memorizing scripture is an end to itself. However, I’ve seen firsthand the benefits in many aspects of daily life that scripture memorization has provided.

It seems like yesterday that our children started working at memorization. I remember all too well the struggles we had sometimes with getting each child to study.  They just couldn’t understand why we were having them memorize scripture.  They thought they’d never use it.

One of the first scriptures learned was from Psalm 119:11

I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

It isn’t enough for our children to obey us or keep away from trouble because “Mommy and Daddy say so.”  Obedience of this kind only works for a while – we are looking for obedience from the heart.  Doing what is right because it IS right and lines up with the Word of God.

Fast forward a couple of years and we are now seeing what’s been sown.  We are seeing the fruit of labor in action.

While interacting with other kids in the neighborhood and beyond, my children are able to gauge whether or not he should watch a particular movie or play a particular video game:

“I will set before my eyes no vile thing.” – Psalm 101:3

Whether or not they should continue to listen/partake in a conversation:

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” – Philippians 4:8

What to look for in a friend:

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,  gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” – Galatians 5:22-23

It is so encouraging to hear our children making right decision in these situations.  Because of their relationship with Jesus and time spent studying the Word, they can hear the Holy Spirit bringing direction, correction and guidance to handle life’s situation.  It gives me hope for their future as they grow into the creation God has called them to be.

I do believe that’s a great reason to memorize scripture!
