Fall is my favorite season. I live in Virginia and the humidity can be so unbearable all summer long. I love summer, but here it can be suffocating. We are all very relieved when fall comes and the breeze blows in and sweeps away the sticky humidity. The leaves start to change color and my boys can play outside without needing a break from the heat every few minutes. Fall is full of so many amazing things.

Here is a list of some family-friendly fall activities:

  • Bonfire in the backyard- we have a fire pit so we can do fires anytime but fall is our favorite time to do this. We get cozy chairs and hoodies. We bring out the supplies for s’mores and just sit and enjoy the warmth. It’s actually one of our favorite things to do as a family because all of my boys like to help put logs on the fire. See, they are learning while having fun!
  • Go for a hike- like I said, our summers here are pretty sweltering. Hiking can be difficult in summer. But come fall, those trails are calling us. We live near a few state parks and love to hike and bike them every year. My boys absolutely love nature and being outdoors so anything to get us all together is a great adventure.
  • Apple picking- we live about 2 hours from an amazing apple orchard in the Shenandoah Valley. The drive up is magnificent and the orchard is so beautiful. They also have a brewery on site as well as apple cider donuts made right there. A deck is attached to the back of the brewery that overlook the mountains. We pick apples and then stop in for donuts and cider. So yummy!
  • Visit a pumpkin patch- sounds so cliche but let’s face it, who doesn’t love a visit to a pumpkin patch? The ones around here are pretty amazing. There are hayrides, cider, pumpkins, and corn mazes. But, they also have homemade pumpkin ice cream, donuts, and pie. I visit at least three pumpkin patches during October. Haha.
  • Collect leaves- since we homeschool, I like to make everything I possibly can educational. Collecting leaves and then pressing them and putting them in our nature journals is so much fun. We research the different kinds of leaves and talk about each one.

I know some of these ideas are no-brainers, but sometimes I need a reminder of the many things to enjoy during each season. These are just a few of the wonderful adventures you can go on with your family this fall. What do you like to do in the fall?
