No homeschool mom wants to admit when they are stressed about homeschooling. We plan our day with excitement and enthusiasm but then life gets in the way, attempting to derail us. One of our children have become ill. Our husband is suddenly without work. A child is refusing to work diligently on his schoolwork. The stressors that set you off may not be the same as your homeschooling friend from co-op. They may not be the same as your parents. Whatever they are, they exist. It is important to recognize these stressors and identify them before they consume us. If you notice that a particular situation sets you off, be aware of this and be sure to watch your reaction and attitude the next time the situation arises. For example, if you constantly have been telling your son to clean his room before bed each evening, and he refuses, admit that this is something that he struggles with. Before you go check his room to make sure he did a decent job, be sure to check your attitude. Be aware that the job might not be done. Be prepared so you do not fly off the handle if you see that it is not done or done well. Take a deep breath, open the door and prepare yourself. If he did not do a good job, be prepared to teach and train rather than to get angry and yell. If he did, let out a sigh of relief and move on.
Be honest with yourself and those around you about what stresses you out. It is not always realistic to remove the stressors in our life, instead we need to learn how to cope with them and be strong when they try to rear their ugly little heads.
Use the following Scriptures to help you prepare for and deal with stress in your life. Once you are honest with what stresses you out, you can be prepared to face them head-on.
- Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7
- Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’ Isaiah 41:10
- Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Matthew 6:25
- Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. 1 Peter 5:6-7
- It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man. Psalm 118:8
