Should we ask for forgiveness in our homeschool?

We all love our children and want to raise them up right. I don’t know about you, but, forgiveness was a topic that was not taught while I was growing up. I’m not referring to forgiveness towards your siblings when spats arise, but rather forgiveness asked for from parent to child.

Feeling a little uncomfortable? Jesus says we should forgive 7 x 70 times. But what does He say about asking for forgiveness?

Well, we know God forgives us.

Romans 5:8 – But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

And we know we should forgive one another

Colossians 3:13 – Bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.

And we know we should ask for forgiveness

Romans 12:18-21 – If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave I to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord. To the contrary, if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

This is especially true as parents when we miss the mark. Just as we are forgiven and grateful for God’s gift of grace, we should extend that teaching first and foremost to our own offspring. Teaching humility, forgiveness, and true repentance by example is the most Christ-like representation we can give our children!

If you are finding this difficult, remember:

2 Corinthians 12:9 – Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.

In the act of acknowledging where we as parents fall short, Christ’s power is the strongest!
