Did you know, it wasn’t too long ago that homeschooling was prohibited and illegal? The homeschooling movement’s early leaders spent their days behind closed doors, with curtains drawn, listening ever so intently for a knock on the door that could signal danger. These incredible pioneers paved the way for so many of us to enjoy homeschooling out in the open and free from fear!
For those living in the United States, we still have great freedoms. One of them is being able to choose our children’s method of education freely. Some see homeschooling as a privilege, and some see it as a right. Whichever side you fall on, it’s essential not to take this for granted!
With the incredible rise in the number of homeschooling families during the pandemic comes more scrutiny. Most parents are diligent in seeing that their children are making progress in their abilities and growth. But there are some new to the homeschooling world who do not understand the sacrifices made previously to bring us to where we are today. Unfortunately, these families turn up red flags by either ignoring their state laws or not following through in educating their children.
These families are few and far between, fortunately. Their actions can, however, cast a bad light on the homeschooling movement as a whole. While it’s easy to point the finger, there is something that we can do to help this problem. We can take a hint from the Bible in Galatians 6:2 and bear each other’s burdens. Instead of pointing the finger, let’s come alongside a family that appears to be struggling or having trouble following state law. Maybe it’s a simple misunderstanding. Possibly the family needs help with their curriculum or getting plugged into a homeschool community. Or a season of illness. Whatever the case, in extending a listening ear or a helping hand, we strengthen the homeschooling community as a whole.
As you are able, reach out a helping hand or encouraging word to those who are struggling. Whether it’s prayer, an act of kindness, or helping teach a subject. While the world seeks to tear each other down, we can build each other up. Ultimately, we follow the teachings of Jesus and are a light to those within the community who do not know Him yet.
