It’s February, and you are reevaluating your schooling situation. Maybe this pandemic schooling isn’t going so well for your child. Perhaps hybrid education isn’t working out the way you had envisioned. Or you’ve been considering the idea of homeschooling and have decided to finally give it a try. Whatever your reason, it’s not too late to start your homeschool journey!
The start of the new year is a perfect time to make the change. Since homeschooling is legal in all 50 states, you can withdraw your children from public or private school at any time.
Here are simple steps to ensure you’re homeschooling legally and making the most of this incredible experience for you and your child.
First and foremost, make sure you research your state’s homeschool laws. It is a requirement to notify the school you are withdrawing your child from by submitting a notice of your intent in most states. If this is a requirement in your state, you must follow through!
Do check in with your state’s homeschooling association for advice and any specific procedures in removing your child from school. They can also keep you abreast of any legislative changes that may be in the pipeline.
Search for and contact your local homeschool support groups. Support groups are an excellent way to not only make connections for your children but for you as well! They can also help with extracurriculars and offer curriculum advice.
When considering curriculum, don’t feel pressured to buy a considerable amount of materials right off the bat. Take your time and look at all your options. Ask other homeschooling families what they use and by all means, make use of your library!
Let your child know your intentions to homeschool him or her. Explain that there will be a way for them to be involved with other children for field trips and co-op classes. Also, give them time to adjust to the change in schedule. It’s ok to slow down and start with one or two subjects. You can always add subjects as time progresses. Give your child the room to learn at their own pace.
So, is it possible to begin homeschooling mid-year? Absolutely! With a little planning, communication, and goal setting, January can look like a bright beacon on your child’s educational journey.
And one more piece of advice. Don’t forget to enjoy the process along the way!
