It’s summer and you hear those dreaded words, “I’m bored.” Instead of turning to the screen, why not encourage them to get outside? Here are some of the fun outdoor activities we’ve done to combat the boredom monster without caving to the internet. Most of them are low cost or free!
Here is a suggested list of some family-fun outdoor summer activities:
- Get outdoors period!
You’ve waited all year for this season. Go, go, go outdoors! Hiking, geocaching, fire fly catching, sprinkler running, reading a good book in a hammock, water balloon tossing, sidewalk chalk painting, picnicking, camping (yes, even your own backyard), star gazing, bike riding, roller blading, and kite flying.
- Take it outside!
Drive-in movies, community pool movie nights, farmers markets, outdoor orchestra concerts, theater in the park presentations, sporting events, and block parties.
- Get involved!
Help your elderly neighbors clear lawn debris from their yard, paint outdoor structures for those in need, spruce up your own outdoor living space with flowers and shrubbery.
- Get moving!
Set a goal or a challenge and see who can reach it first! 10,000 steps a day, couch to 5K, timed obstacle course or who can swim the furthest.
5) Discover something new!
Take up a new outdoor hobby like wind surfing, running, beach volleyball or gardening. Get the whole family involved!
- Clean it up!
Wash your car and your neighbors too! Organize and execute a neighborhood garage sale. Use the proceeds to do something family oriented over the summer to make some new memories.
No matter what you choose to do, do it as a family. No doubt you’ll have a great time and make precious memories that will last a lifetime. Just go outside and do it!
