It seems that winter has been hanging on much longer than expected. With the furnace still cranking at night, we even had snow in our state in the middle of April!!

Nonetheless, spring is finally here!!!

This can be a refreshing time for homeschoolers. After all the winter activities have begun to fade and you’re tired of being indoors, it is time to get outside. Breathe in the fresh air and see what you can see.

Take your children on a walk around your own yard, and take a good, close look to see all the nature things that are happening.  If you don’t have much yard space, a little trip to a quiet park can be a great alternative.  The other bonus: this counts as Science, so make a note of it or have your young children draw pictures of something they saw or have your older children do a little more research on something they noticed.

We’ve been taking advantage of these recent springtime days and here are some of the things we’ve seen:

  • Blooming daffodils and hyacinths
  • Bumble bees happily buzzing around those early blooms
  • A family of deer grazing on our grass that needed to be cut
  • Squirrels busily digging up the acorns they’ve stored
  • Two mourning doves (male and female) trying to build their nest
  • Skinks slithering up the side of the house
  • Various birds visiting the bird feeders
  • A sleepy racoon making his way back into the woods
  • Lots of spiders
  • New leaves budding and filling in the trees
  • Woodpeckers going to town on the old trees
  • A lanky fox trotting off across the road
  • Juncos visiting my hydrangea bushes

Take a few moments to be outside, get some fresh air, and enjoy God’s creation with your children!

How is the weather in your area? Are you enjoying the signs of spring? What have you discovered on your nature walks?
