It’s April. Time to kick out the staleness of winter and add some spring fun to your homeschool! Let’s celebrate learning opportunities that are both traditional and quirky. Just think of the fun exploring you can do with your kids!
Since April is National Humor Month, spend some time devouring joke books, bad puns, and clean comedians. I can’t think of a better way to welcome in spring than with laughter!
Starting out this humorous month is April Fools Day. Admittedly, this isn’t my favorite holiday but, I’m sure plenty of kids out there will think of some constructive (and not deconstructive) ways to be playful and fun. Whatever you do, just make sure your tricks and pranks are all in good fun with no hurt feelings!
Children’s Book Day is April 2nd. This is a day I can embrace! Make this day more personalized by sharing your favorite childhood books with your children and plan a fun activity to go with it. My favorite childhood book is Ferdinand. After reading this classic to my kids, we’ll follow up with some flower planting and maybe a flower painting tutorial off YouTube. However, you choose to celebrate, curl up and enjoy!
It’s time to go to the library for many bird books because on April 8th; it’s Draw a Picture of a Bird Day. Allow each child to pick their favorite bird, do a little research and then draw your favorite pose. Take down those snowflakes and hearts and replace them with these new masterpieces!
April 10th is National Siblings Day. If your sibling isn’t your best friend, it’s time to find something fun to do together! Try playing a board game, baking together, or write a note to each sibling telling them why they are unique to you.
Did you know April 13th is Scrabble Day! Challenge the family to a Scrabble tournament or choose to play a related spelling game like Boggle, Bananagrams, or just use Scrabble tiles to practice your spelling words for the week. What a fun and tactile way to ace your test!
April 17th is Bat Appreciation Day. No kidding! If bats still freak you out, never fear! A little library or internet research can help quell those fears and teach you about the wonders of these creatures.
A great way to wrap up April is to partake in Earth Day on April 22nd. On this day, choose a service project based on your children’s ages or as a family.
