If you’ve homeschooled for any length of time, you’ve probably heard complaining during a particular subject or while using a specific curriculum.
“This makes no sense!”
“No matter how many times I listen to this, I just don’t get it!”
After listening to the complaints repeatedly, I decided to pick up a more story-like and “fun” curriculum. Unfortunately, while my kids were ecstatic, I was shortly met with another round of complaining.
“I don’t get this!”
“No matter how much I read it, it doesn’t make sense!”
My children quickly learned an important lesson. If you don’t listen carefully or listen thoroughly, you aren’t going to get it. Being mindful and deliberate in reading and listening makes all the difference in the world!
This got me thinking about all the times I “don’t get it” or think, “this makes no sense,” all because I’m not slowing down and letting the truth of God’s word sink into my brain and spirit.
While I’m not “switching books,” I do allow my attention to get diverted instead of concentrating on the Word and allowing it to lead me.
The Bible is the ultimate handbook and has much to say about understanding. The books of Job, Psalms, and Proverbs literally have dozens of references each to this word! Naming just a few and the ones that have spoken to me on this journey:
“Teach me, and I will hold my tongue, cause me to understand where I have erred.”
Job 6:24
“Don’t be like the horse or like the mule, which has no understanding, which must be harnessed with bit and bridle; else they will not come near you.”
Psalm 32:9
“They do not know, nor do they understand; they walk about in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are unstable.”
Psalm 82:5
“So that you incline your ear to wisdom and apply your heart to understanding.”
Proverbs 2:2
“Therefore, I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.”
Matthew 13:13
So, while we may not immediately “get it,” we can always go to the Word of God for greater wisdom, understanding, and guidance in whatever area God is trying to speak.
