English, math, history, grammar, science, foreign language, physical education, music, art, oh my! Just looking at the list is overwhelming in itself! Do you want to teach it all but are unsure how to it? You could clone yourself or just combine subjects.
Yes! An easier way to do it all is to simply combine subjects. This increases learning without overloading students and parents. It’s a win-win for all!
There are many ways to approach this type of learning, In my opinion, the easiest way is to start with history. First, choose the time period you’re interested in studying. Then you can build the rest of the study off of this. Say you want to teach Ancient History. Choose your history spine and maps that correspond with the geographic areas you’re studying such as Egypt, the Fertile Crescent, or Ancient Greece.
From here, you can branch-off into language arts. Choose historical fiction literature that matches the time period and reading level of the student for independent readers. For family read alouds, you can pick from any level. Add in some creative writing assignments to mirror those of the literature reading or read alouds from that time period. For older students, you may also decide to make their writing assignments from the history readings. For high school students, additional research can be required. For younger students, handwriting can also be evaluated off of these assignments.
Combination learning can also be done with science. Choose your time period of study and Google scientists and their discoveries during that area. Proceed forward with biographical information on the scientist and what they discovered. Throw in some experiments as well. If that is too complicated, there is now science curricula that mirror the historical timeline that you can buy. This is a great way to integrate science seamlessly into your homeschool and make it memorable and educational.
For fine arts, you have the option of adding art and music from the historical time period you are studying. Learn about different artists and musicians and attempt their creative style. This rounds out a multi-faceted learning experience!
By combining subjects and making learning more integrative not only are you saving your time and sanity, you are making learning more relatable, memorable, and much more fun!
