Perhaps you’ve heard the following complaints during your homeschool day:
“I don’t get it!”
“The guy makes no sense!”
“No matter how much I watch the DVD, I just don’t get it.”
So, breaking from tradition, I allowed my childs’ protest over our long-time, trust-worthy math program to get to me.
Following some advice, I picked up an inexpensive Math book that was more story-like and “fun”. This met with my son’s approval.
And, guess what I heard the following week? I was again greeted with another round of:
“I don’t get it!”
“This makes no sense!”
“No matter how much I read it, I just don’t get it.”
Moral of the situation, if you don’t READ thoroughly or LISTEN carefully, you aren’t going to get it. Being deliberate in reading and listening makes all the difference!
This got me thinking about all the times I “don’t get it” because I don’t slow down and let the truth of God’s word sink in.
I don’t “switch books”, but I allow my attention to get diverted instead of concentrating on the Word and allowing it to lead me.
The Bible has a lot to say about understanding. The book of Job, Psalms and Proverbs have dozens of references to the word each!
“Teach me, and I will hold my tongue; Cause me to understand wherein I have erred.”
Job 6:24
“Do not be like the horse or like the mule, Which have no understanding, Which must be harnessed with bit and bridle, Else they will not come near you.”
Psalm 32:9
“They do not know, nor do they understand; They walk about in darkness; All the foundations of the earth are unstable.”
Psalm 82:5
“So that you incline your ear to wisdom, And apply your heart to understanding;”
Proverbs 2:2
“Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.”
Matthew 13:13
Whether it is concrete fact or spiritual life lessons, the important thing is that we are also learning and continuing to grow!
