I know many homeschooling parents out there don’t teach art. For some, it’s because it’s too much of a hassle to drag out all the supplies, and it’s messy. But for most, it’s because they don’t believe in their own creativity and claim they have no artistic ability.

In my opinion, this is just plain wrong! But, like music and poetry, the beauty of Art is in the eye of the beholder. And, also like music and poetry, there is no wrong answer!

The best way to expand your artistic skills is to just do it! So pull out the supplies, get messy, add more fun to your homeschool day!

How? There are so many ways to incorporate art.

One of the most popular is to join a co-op where art is offered. But, if this isn’t available in your area, there’s no need to fret. Below are some ideas to help you bring the experience of art into your home.

Visit your library for an abundance of books on art styles biographies of famous artists. You’ll find every kind of book imaginable from elementary through adult!

Nothing says art like a trip to your local art museum! Visit your destination online so you can give your children a little warm-up to the artists and styles they will be seeing. Some museums may even have virtual tours. In addition, most galleries have docents through the building. So, please encourage your children to ask all the questions they have!

Can’t figure out how to do it? Buying a preplanned art kit may just be the answer to your artistic challenges. Some will give directions with pictures, some with words, and some will even have an online option.

Speaking of online, YouTube is filled with a variety of art tutorials. Drawing, watercolor, pastels, clay. The choices are endless! And, they also come in a variety of difficulties. But, the best part is you can pause the video when need be!

Don’t forget to think out of the box. Even graphic design and photography are art forms too. You don’t need fancy equipment to do either! You can easily take pictures and edit them on the phone, and there are many free websites offering design ware.

So, with a bit of thinking outside the box, you can bring the fun of art in any form into your household and enrich your homeschool!
