We are in the middle of winter and it’s only snowed one time (and that was before Christmas). Instead, we have had nothing but rain. It’s so gloomy and sad looking outside. It’s also too cold for me to send the kids out to play in it. So we sit like Sally in The Cat In The Hat and stare hopelessly out the window. Haha.

I have had to come up with lots of fun snacks and activities for us since we can’t go outside. It’s been a challenge but we seem to be doing okay. Below are two lists. One is a snack list and one is an activity list.

Rainy Day Snacks:

  1. Popcorn with candy- just pop some popcorn and add whatever candy is your favorite. We like to do mini M&M’s.
  2. Raw sugar snap peas and ranch dressing
  3. Homemade rice krispie treats- you can add candy to the top of this one too.
  4. Celery and peanut butter
  5. Pretzels and peanut butter
  6. Nuts and cheese- usually almonds or cashews with white cheddar.
  7. Yogurt with sprinkles- makes the yogurt feel more like ice cream.
  8. Cheese and crackers
  9. Chocolate dipped pretzel rods
  10. Hot cocoa with marshmallows or whipped cream

Rainy Day Activities:

  1. Board games or card games
  2. Watch a movie- we try to keep this at a minimum.
  3. Read aloud together- this is our favorite activity.
  4. Read individually and/or rest
  5. Make up games- my boys do this all the time.
  6. Make a huge fort- another favorite for my boys.
  7. Do an art project- we love doing chalk pastels.
  8. Go visit a friend or grandparents
  9. Bake- this is my favorite thing to do!
  10. Go to the library

With so much rain in our forecast this winter (and tons more to come in next week), these simple snacks and activities will keep us busy and out of trouble. They will also help my children to develop a relationship with one another. Whether it’s tons of snow or gloomy rain or super freezing temperatures keeping you inside, these ideas will help your kids to not be “bored”.
