In military terms, D-Day is any day which a combat attack or operation is to be initiated.  However, most of the world knows D-Day as June 6, 1944, the largest seaborne invasion in history!  Allied countries put forth massive effort to liberate western Europe from Nazi Germany by landing on the beaches of Normandy, France during World War II.  Many other military campaigns in World War II followed after D-Day.

If a World War II veteran was a part of your household, it would be appropriate to visit their grave to pay your respects, or perhaps read any written accounts they may have made.

Though this was a turning point in the war, many lost their lives.  Due to the sensitive nature of material, this is best viewed by older children.  If your children don’t have a good foundation in this conflict, the History Channel on Youtube has many good offerings to view.

After gaining a bit of background on this historic day, taking a virtual visit of memorials, and the beaches of Normandy is also appropriate to remember the conflict and the brave men who faced it in the name of freedom.

D-Day from the Holocaust Encyclopedia has a good website laid out with facts, figures, and photos.

Take a virtual trip to the National D-Day Memorial located in Bedford, Virginia.

Why not visit Normandy, France?  Not only will you see present day views, but, historical shots from World War II!

Book are also a great way to visit the past.  Again, these are best suited for older children and may be used a read alouds for slightly younger children.  These titles are thought provoking and sure to provide fuel for discussion!
